Day of the Dead Exhibit & Presentation by Papel Picado Artist at Tortilla Flats
Soquel, CA, September 13, 2011 – Cheryl Marquez, owner of Tortilla Flats, announces “Dining with our Ancestors,” an exhibit and presentation by renowned papel picado artist Catalina Delgado Trunk. The opening of the exhibit will be held at Tortilla Flats on Sunday, October 9th at 12:00 pm, and will include a talk by the artist. Ms. Delgado Trunk will speak on the origins and evolution of the Mexican Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) tradition. An exhibit of her work will continue at Tortilla Flats through October 31st.
Ms. Delgado Trunk is renowned for both her artwork and her knowledge of Mexican traditions and culture. She lectures and teaches on the tradition of Mexico frequently, most recently at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. As an artist, Ms. Delgado takes the cut paper tradition of the picado to a new level. Incorporating, history, politics, myth, and cultural tradition, her work stimulates the mind and the eye. Her work appears in the collections of the de Young Museum (Diane & Sandy Besser Collection), San Francisco, California, The Museum of International Folk Art Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Museum of Fine Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center Albuquerque New Mexico. The Day of the Dead tradition dates back to the Aztec. With the arrival of Europeans, indigenous practices and catholic traditions fused to form new customs. Ms Delgado Trunk’s talk will delve into the origins of the holiday and the symbolism that remains in the customs, as well as the regional differences in the traditions.
Ms. Delgado Trunk’s presentation will be accompanied by a prix fixe lunch at $60.00 per person. Seating is limited and reservations required. Reservations can be made by calling (831) 476-1754.
